M*A*S*H* (1972)
Every normal person sees the original movie first and then the TV series that was made after it. Of course, I had to be different. So, my first contact with MASH was by watching the 11 seasons from this so funny and yet witty show.
I won’t bore you with details, you know the plot. We have the 2 great surgeons who act like kids (I have absolutely loved Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce, he’s been amazing), “Hotlips” (Maj. Houlihan, played perfectly by a sassy and yet strict Loretta Swit), a hairy and “feminine till they throw me off the army” Jamie Farr and Radar, played by Gary Burghoff, the one who starred in the MASH movie too.
If the movie was hilarious, you can imagine what 11 seasons of the same subject can look like. Even if trying to touch on the profound human problems such a war brings up, the episodes don’t lose their funny side, with all the tricks played by the officers and the permanent conflict between the unruly surgeons and the officers who are actually trying to lead a military life. In this matter Loretta Swit is adorable in her role as a rule abiding, military fanatic, who’s still a sexy woman.
The 99 Emmy nominations, the Golden Globe award and People’s Choice award don’t come as a surprise. It’s an old TV comedy, but its charm and value live till today. If you haven’t seen it, please consider renting it. It’s surely worth your time.
