The Rock (1996)
Since I am a woman, most of these “heroic movies” kinda leave me unimpressed. So this movie didn’t “speak” to me from the start. And still, I’ve seen it 3 times already. First, when it came out, then few years ago on the TV and some time this year on Netflix.
“The Rock” is a fast-paced action thriller that keeps you engaged each and every minute. Ed Harris does a great role as the Brigadier General Francis X. Hummel, who is furious at the government’s lack of response when it comes to paying compensation to the families of Marines who died in all kinds of illegal operations organized by the government. Since he didn’t get any response, he’s ready to take matters in his hands. So he steals a stockpile or rockets armed with a lethal chemical and takes over the old Alcatraz Island, with over 80 tourists who are currently visiting the disaffected prison.
By threatening to launch the lethal gas rockets over the San Francisco Bay Area, he is hoping this will make the government pay the money “owed”.
The authorities are helpless so they choose to release the imprisoned Captain John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), the only person who was able to eascape Alcatraz, to help them enter Alcatraz and annihilate the threat. In order to neutralize the chemicals, they put Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) in their team too. He’s a young scientist, taking a lot of verbal abuse for the seasoned prisoner and soldier.
The action becomes faster and more entertaining as they enter Alcatraz and face a very strong opposition from the Marines who took over the prison. The intensity gradually grows and we barely keep up with it, even if the plot is predictable in some moments. Still it’s an entertaining movie and, even if I personally don’t like the genre, I have to admit it was a great way to spend two hours.
